The Dog Show
Which entry won best in show at the 2008 Kew Dog Show?
January 14, 2008
Neither Audubon (clue 4), Dreyer (9), nor Bates (10) owns the dog judged best-in-show, so either Chatsworth or English does. If Chatsworth were the owner of the champion dog, by clue 12, Winter Song would have placed 2nd. Neither Sunflower Miss (clue 1), Prince Albert (6), nor Ivory Joe (9) won 5th place in the Kew Dog Show, so then Laddie o' the Loch would have, with the Rough Collie placing 4th (3). Sunflower Miss isn't owned by Chatsworth (7), couldn't have placed 3rd given the arrangement and clue 1, and couldn't have placed 4th given the arrangement and clues 1 and 11. Therefore, Chatsworth doesn't own the best-in-show dog; English does. By clue 12, Chatsworth's dog finished 2nd, 3rd, or 4th in the judging. If Chatsworth's dog had placed 2nd, Winter Song would have been 3rd in the event (12). Neither Sunflower Miss (clue 1), Prince Albert (6), nor Ivory Joe (9) won 5th place in the Kew Dog Show, so then Laddie o' the Loch would have, with the Rough Collie placing 4th (3). Since Sunflower Miss isn't owned by Chatsworth (7) and Laddie o' the Loch isn't an English Springer Spaniel (11), by clue 1, Sunflower Miss would be English's entry, with the English Springer Spaniel Chatsworth's. Since Dreyer doesn't own Winter Song (2), Chatsworth's dog wouldn't be Ivory Joe (9); nor would it be Prince Albert (11). So, there is no way for Chatsworth's entry to have placed 2nd. If Chatsworth's dog had placed 3rd, Winter Song would have been 4th in the dog show (12). Neither Sunflower Miss (clue 1), Prince Albert (6), nor Ivory Joe (9) won 5th place, so Laddie o' the Loch would have, with the Rough Collie placing 4th (3). Since Dreyer doesn't own Winter Song (2), by clue 9, Ivory Joe would be English's entry and Dreyer's dog would have placed 2nd. By clue 1, Sunflower Miss would have been judged 2nd, with the English Springer Spaniel 3rd. The English Springer Spaniel would be Prince Albert--no (11). So, there is no way for Chatsworth's entry to have placed 3rd. Chatsworth owns the 4th-place dog, with Winter Song then the 5th best (12). Since Dreyer doesn't own Winter Song (2), by clue 9, Ivory Joe would have been judged 1st or 2nd in the event. If Ivory Joe had won best in show, with Dreyer's entry then 2nd (9), by clues 1 and 7, Sunflower Miss would have placed 2nd or 3rd. If Sunflower Miss had been 2nd and the English Springer Spaniel 3rd (1), the English Springer Spaniel would have been Laddie o' the Loch or Prince Albert--no (11). If Sunflower Miss had placed 3rd and the English Springer Spaniel then 4th (1), again the English Springer Spaniel would have been Laddie o' the Loch or Prince Albert--no (11). So, Ivory Joe did not win best of show and placed 2nd, with Dreyer's dog then 3rd (9). By clues 1 and 7, Sunflower Miss would have placed 1st or 3rd. If Sunflower Miss had been 3rd and the English Springer Spaniel 4th (1), the English Springer Spaniel would have been Laddie o' the Loch or Prince Albert--no (11). Sunflower Miss won as best in show, with Ivory Joe an English Springer Spaniel (1). Then the Rough Collie was judged 3rd and Laddie o' the Loch 4th (3). By elimination, Prince Albert won 3rd place. Vicki is then Chatsworth (6). Sunflower Miss isn't a Kerry Blue Terrier (7); by clue 10, then, Laddie is a Kerry Blue Terrier and Bates owns the 5th-place dog. Audubon's entry won 2nd place. William is then English (4). The 5th-place dog is a Newfoundland (8), with English's best-in-show dog a Papillon. Richard isn't Audubon (5) or Bates (10); he is Dreyer. Finally, by clue 8, Samantha is Audubon and Thomas Bates. In sum, the results of the best-in-show judging at the 2008 Kew Dog Show are

  • 1st -- Sunflower Miss, a Papillon owned by William English
  • 2nd -- Ivory Joe, an English Springer Spaniel owned by Samanatha Audubon
  • 3rd -- Prince Albert, a Rough Collie owned by Richard Dreyer
  • 4th -- Laddie o' the Loch, a Kerry Blue Terrier owned by Vicki Chatsworth
  • 5th -- Winter Song, a Newfoundland owned by Thomas Bates
