Peter Post Delivers the Mail
Puzzle editors get their morning mail and the solver gets a tough Logic Puzzle.
October 15, 2007
In clues 2 and 5, either Jack is Thurman or four different mail recipients are named. If Jack were Thurman, since the mail deliveries were made somewhere on floors 2 through 9 (introduction) and since Peter went down 4 floors from the logic puzzle editor's office to Thurman's (clue 5) and down 3 floors from Jack's office to the sudoku editor's (2), the logic puzzle editor would be on the 9th floor, Jack Thurman on the 5th floor, and the sudoku editor on the 2nd floor. By clue 3, after delivering mail to Rivers, Peter went up 6 floors to give Helen her mail. If Rivers were the sudoku editor, Helen would be on the 8th floor--but since the offices are on floors 2-9, there would be no way for clue 7 to work. If Helen were the logic puzzle editor, Rivers would be on the 3rd floor--but again clue 7 couldn't work. Rivers and Helen would be the fourth and fifth editors to the three in clues 2 and 5, getting their mail either before or after the three. However, clue 7 cannot work in either case. So, Jack in clue 2 isn't Thurman in clue 5; and four different editors are named between the two clues. Either the two in clue 2 got their mail ahead of the two in clue 5 or vice versa. If the two in clue 5 received their mail earlier, then the two in clue 2 either got their mail with one editor between or got their mail directly after. If the order were the logic puzzle editor, Thurman (5), another editor, Jack, and the sudoku editor (2), there would be no way for clue 3 to fit without having six editors. If the order were the logic puzzle editor, Thurman (5), Jack, and the sudoku editor (2), then by clue 3, either Helen would be the logic puzzle editor or Rivers would be the sudoku editor. Trying Helen as the logic puzzle editor, by clue 7, Kathy would be Thurman and Jack Price. From the movement of down 4 (5), down 1 (7), and down 3 (2), there would be a difference of 8 floors between where Helen's office would be and where the sudoku editor's office would be--contradicting the floors 2-9 restriction. With Rivers as the sudoku editor, then by clue 7, Kathy would be Thurman and Jack Price. From the movement of down 4 (5), down 1 (7), and down 3 (2), there would be a difference of 8 floors between where the logic puzzle editor's office would be and where the sudoku editor's office would be--again contradicting the floors 2-9 restriction in the introduction. Therefore, the mail deliveries were made earlier to the pair in clue 2 than the pair in clue 5. Then the two in clue 5 either got their mail with one editor between or got their mail directly after the two in clue 2. If the order were Jack, the sudoku editor (2), another editor, the logic puzzle editor, and Thurman (5), by clue 3, Rivers would be the sudoku editor and Helen the other editor or Rivers would be the other editor and Helen the logic puzzle editor. In either case, however, there is no way for clue 7 to fit given five editors. So, in consecutive order, Peter Post delivered mail to Jack, the sudoku editor (2), the logic puzzle editor, and Thurman (5). By clue 3, Rivers must be the sudoku editor and Helen the logic puzzle editor. By clue 7, either Kathy got her mail first followed by Jack Price or Kathy is Thurman and Price's mail was delivered last. If Kathy had gotten her mail first and Jack were Price, by clue 8, Kathy would be on the 6th floor with Jack Price on the 5th, sudoku editor Rivers on the 2nd, logic puzzle editor Helen on the 8th, and Thurman on the 4th. However, there is no way for Lois to then have a 3rd-floor office (1). So, Kathy is Thurman and Price's mail was delivered last. By clue 8, Jack is on the 6th floor, with sudoku editor Rivers on the 3rd, logic puzzle editor Helen on the 9th, Kathy Thurman on the 5th, and Price on the 4th. Lois is Rivers (1) and Ian Price. Kathy Thurman edits the cryptograms (6), Ian word searches (4), and Jack crosswords. Jack is Spencer and Helen Quincy (9). In sum, Peter Post delivered the morning mail in order as follows:

  • Jack Spencer, crosswords, 6th floor
  • Lois Rivers, sudokus, 3rd floor
  • Helen Quincy, logic puzzles, 9th floor
  • Kathy Thurman, cryptograms, 5th floor
  • Ian Price, word searches, 4th floor
