Chicken Commercials
Don't chicken out of trying this Challenger Logic Puzzle previewing five new commercials.
June 6, 2005
Neither Hackman (clue 1), Cruise (4), nor Deniro (5) stars in the ad spot filmed Monday, so either Alda or Nicholson does. Then the Monday commercial doesn't feature Johnny Uduper (3, 7); nor does it feature Clint Eastduper (1) or Elvis Presduper (5). If Monday's spot were the Fred Flintduper one, Robert's commercial would have been taped Tuesday (6). Then Jack's (1) and Alan's (5) work would have been on Monday and Wednesday--by clue 2, Alan's on Wednesday and Jack's then on Monday. By clue 5, Deniro would have been in the studio on Thursday and the Elvis Presduper spot would have been shot Friday. By clue 4, however, Cruise would have starred as Elvis Presduper--no. So, the Fred Flintduper spot wasn't taped on Monday and the George Washingduper ad was. Since Nicholson doesn't play George Washingduper (3), Alda does. By clue 4, Tom's commercial was shot the day before Cruise's, so Tom was in the studio one day Monday-Thursday. If Tom had worked Thursday and Cruise Friday, since neither plays Elvis Presduper (4), by clue 5, Alan would have taped on Monday, Deniro on Tuesday, and the actor playing Elvis Presduper on Wednesday. Neither Jack (1) nor Gene, who isn't Cruise (8), would have taped on Friday, so Robert would have, with the Fred Flintduper spot shot Thursday (6). However, by clue 1, Robert then would play Clint Eastduper, which he doesn't (6). So, Tom didn't tape on Thursday. If Tom had taped on Wednesday and Cruise on Thursday, since neither plays Elvis Presduper (4), by clue 5, the Elvis Presduper spot would have been shot Friday. Cruise isn't Gene (8) and couldn't be Jack (1) or Alan (5); he would be Robert, with the Fred Flintduper commercial Wednesday's taping (6). Again, however, by clue 1, Robert then would play Clint Eastduper, which he doesn't (6). So, Tom didn't tape on Wednesday. If Tom Alda had taped the George Washingduper spot on Monday and Cruise on Tuesday, either Jack (1) or Alan (5) would be Cruise with the other then in the studio on Wednesday. If Jack were Cruise and Alan had shot his ad on Wednesday, by clue 5, Deniro would have worked on Thursday and the Elvis Presduper commercial would have been made on Friday. Then by clue 1, Thursday's taping would have been the Clint Eastduper spot and Wednesday's would have starred Hackman. By clue 6, however, Robert would star as Clint Eastduper, which he doesn't. If Alan were Cruise and Jack had been in the studio on Wednesday, by clue 1, Hackman would have worked on Thursday and the Clint Eastduper ad would have been shot on Friday. By clue 5, Deniro would be Jack and Hackman would play Elvis Presduper, with Clint Eastduper then played by Nicholson, who would be Robert (8). But clue 6 cannot work given this arrangement. Therefore, Tom didn't make his commercial on Monday; Tom was in the studio on Tuesday and Cruise on Wednesday (4). Jack (1) and Alan (5) must have filmed on Monday and Wednesday or vice versa. If Alan had been in the studio Monday and Jack on Wednesday, by clue 1, Hackman would have acted on Thursday and the Clint Eastduper spot would have been filmed Friday. Deniro would have shot his ad on Tuesday (5) and Nicholson on Friday. Then Gene would be Hackman (8) and Robert Nicholson would star as Clint Eastduper--a conflict with clue 6. So, Jack shot his spot on Monday and Alan his on Wednesday. By clue 5, Deniro worked on Thursday, with the Elvis Presduper ad being shot on Friday. Hackman was in the studio on Tuesday (1), with Nicholson then making his commercial on Friday. By clue 8, Gene is Deniro and Robert Nicholson. Gene stars as Fred Flintduper (6). By clue 1, Hackman plays Johnny Uduper and Cruise Clint Eastduper. In sum, the five Duper Chicken commercials were shot as follows:

  • Mon.: Jack Alda, George Washingduper
  • Tue.: Tom Hackman, Johnny Uduper
  • Wed.: Alan Cruise, Clint Eastduper
  • Thu.: Gene Deniro, Fred Flintduper
  • Fri.: Robert Nicholson, Elvis Presduper
