Word Square 3
You don't have to be LUCKY--just logical--to rebuild our Logic Puzzle Word Square.
February 9, 2004
From the introduction, each row and each column of the 6x6 Word Square contains the characters LUCKY and a blank cell in some order, so that no character or space can be repeated in a row or a column. By clue 1, the 2nd letter in row 1 is C; while by clue 6, the 1st letter down column 3 is U. There cannot be a blank box in row 1 before the C, or the C would be the 1st letter down column 3; so the C is in the 2nd column of row 1. Since the 1st letter down column 3 is U (clue 6), by clue 8, the U in row 3 must be in column 4. By clue 3, the C and Y are consecutive down column 4. Since the C in row 1 is in column 2, the C in column 4 must be in row 4 or 5. However, if the C were in row 5 and the Y in row 6, the Y would be the 3rd or 4th letter across row 6--no, it is the 5th (4). So, in column 4, the C and Y are in rows 4 and 5, respectively. The L and K are consecutive across row 4 (5). The L can't be in the 1st column, since by clue 7 the Y would then be in the 6th row--no (4). If the L were in column 5 and the K in column 6, by clue 2, the K in column 2 would be in row 5. Then, by clue 12, the C in row 5 would be in column 3. However, there is then no way for C and K to fall consecutively across row 2 (10). Therefore, in clue 5, L is in column 2 and K in column 3 of row 4. By clue 2, the K in column 2 is in row 5; while by clue 12, C is in column 3, with column 1 then containing the space. By clue 10, in row 2 C and K are in columns 5 and 6, respectively. If the C in column 1 were in row 3, the C in column 6 would have to be in row 6, a conflict with clue 4. The C in column 1 is in row 6, with the C in column 6 in row 3. By clue 13, the K in row 3 must be in column 1. By clue 11, the K in column 5 isn't in row 1 and must be in row 6; the K in column 4 is in row 1. By clue 4, then, the 6th column of row 6 can't have the space in it and must have the Y. If the U were in row 2 of column 3, with the space in row 1 (6), the Y in column 3 would be in row 3 and the L then would be the 5th letter down the column, contradicting clue 9. The U in column 3 is in row 1 (6). The U in row 6 must be in column 2, and the L in row 6 must be in column 4 (9), with the row 6 space then in column 3 and the column 4 space in row 2. The U in row 2 is in column 1. By clue 7, in column 1, the L is in row 1 and the Y in row 4. The row 1 Y is in column 5, with the row 1 space in column 6. The L in column 6 is in row 5 and the U in row 4. The row 4 space is in column 5. The row 2 L is in column 3 and the Y in column 2. The space in column 2 is in row 3. In row 3, the Y is in column 3 and the L in column 5. The U in row 5 is in column 5. In sum, Word Square 3 is filled as follows:

 123456
L C U K Y
U Y L  C K
K  Y U L C
Y L K C  U
 K C Y U L
C U  L K Y
