A JUMP for Joy Word Square
Jump on this tough Logic Puzzle and you'll jump for joy when you solve it.
August 15, 2008
From the introduction, each row and each column of the Word Square contains the characters JUMP and a blank cell in some order, so that no character or space can be repeated in a row or a column. By clue 7, J is 2nd down column 1, so J is either in row 2 or in row 3 of column 1. If J were in row 3 of column 1, since by clue 1 J is immediately followed by M across row 2, JM would be in columns 2-3, 3-4, or 4-5 of row 2. However, M is 4th down column 5 (clue 5), so JM couldn't be in columns 4-5 of row 2. Trying JM in columns 2-3 of row 2, by clue 8, U would be in column 3, row 3. By clue 5, M in column 5 would be in row 4 or row 5. In either case, however, there would be no way for the consecutive UJ down column 5 (9). Trying JM in columns 3-4 of row 2, by clue 5, M down column 5 would be in row 4 with space in row 5 or M down column 5 would be in row 5. Trying the first possibility, with the M down column 5 in row 4 and the column 5 space in row 5, by clue 3, the row 1 M would be in column 3. However, there is no way for clue 8 to work given this arrangement. Trying the second possibility, with the column 5 M in row 5, again by clue 3 the row 1 M would be in column 3 and again there would be no way for clue 8 to work. Therefore, there is no way for the J in clue 7 to be in row 3; it is in row 2. Then the row 2 M is in column 2 (1). By clue 5, M in column 5 would be in row 4 or row 5. If the column 5 M were in row 5, by clue 9, UJ down column 5 would be in rows 2-3 or 3-4. Trying the UJ in rows 2-3, the column 5 space and P would be in rows 1 and 4 or vice versa. If the column 5 space were in row 1, the row 1 M would be in column 3 (3)--but there would be no way for clue 8 to work. If the column 5 P were in row 1 and the space in row 4, by clues 3 and 8, the row 1 M would be in column 4. By clues 2 and 7, the column 1 space would be in row 3. The row 3 M would be in column 3, and the row 4 M in column 1. The column 3 U would be in row 4 (8). In column 1, the U would be in row 1 and and the P in row 5. The column 3 P would have to be in row 2--no (10). So, the column 5 M is not in row 5; it is in row 4, with the column 5 space in row 5. By clue 9, U is in row 3 and J in row 4 of column 5. By elimination, the column 5 P is in row 1. If P in row 2 were in column 3, by clue 10, the column 3 space would be in row 1. Then the row 1 M would be in column 4 (3). The row 1 J would be in column 2--no (4). So, the P in row 2 is in column 4, with the row 2 space in column 3. By clue 8, the column 3 M is in row 3 with U in row 4. P in column 3 is in row 5 and J in row 1. By clue 3, the row 1 M is in column 4. The row 3 P is in column 1 or column 2. In either case, the row 3 U must be in column 4 (6). The column 4 space is in row 4 and the J in row 5. In row 5, the M is in column 1 and U in column 2. J in column 2 is in row 4, with the row 4 P in column 1. In column 2, space is in row 1 and P in row 3; while in column 1, U is in row 1 and space in row 3. In sum, our JUMP for Joy Word Square contains the word JUMP as follows:

 12345
U  J M P
J M  P U
 P M U J
P J U  M
M U P J
