Letter Dice 13
Can you solve our first Challenger Letter Dice?
December 3, 2007
According to the introduction, each of the 24 faces of the Letter Dice has a different letter on it; the letters Q and Z do not appear. Given the word CHIP, we arbitrarily assign C to die 1, H to die 2, I to die 3, and P to die 4. From PILE, L can't be on die 3 or die 4; while from CLAW, L can't be on die 1. L is on die 2 with H. The E in PILE is on die 1. From TOME, T isn't on die 1 with E; while from LINT, T isn't on die 2 or die 3. T is on die 4. Then the N in LINT is on die 1. From CLAW, either A is on die 3 and W on die 4 or vice versa. Trying A on die 3 and W on die 4, from SAND either S is on die 2 and D on die 4 or vice versa. If S were on die 2 and D on die 4, F (FANS) would be the fifth letter on die 4. Given JIVE and JINX, then, with E and N both on die 1, the V and X would be on the same die--in this case die 2, with J completing die 4. However, there is no way for GRAY to be made given this arrangement. If S were on die 4 and D on die 2, F (FANS) would be on die 2. Given JIVE and JINX, then, with E and N both on die 1, the V and X would be on the same die--in this case either completing die 2 or die 4. Again, however, there is no way for GRAY to be made given this arrangement. Therefore, from CLAW, A is not on die 3 and W on die 4; A is on die 4 and W on die 3. From SAND, either S is on die 2 and D on die 3 or vice versa. If S were on die 3 and D on die 2, F (FANS) would be on die 2. Given JIVE and JINX, then, with E and N both on die 1, the V and X would be on the same die--in this case die 2 or die 4. However, there is no way for GRAY to be made if V and X were on die 2. V and X would be on die 4 and J on die 2. Given GRAY and LARK, either G or Y then would complete die 2--but there is no way for TOME to be made given this arrangement. So, from SAND, S is on die 2 and D on die 3. F (FANS) is on die 3. O isn't on die 1 or die 3 (BOND) nor on die 4 (TOME) and is on die 2. B is on die 4 (BOND) and M on die 3 (TOME). If the R in LARK were on die 1 and K then the sixth letter on die 3, there would be no way for GRAY to be made; the R in LARK is on die 3 and the K on die 1. Given JIVE and JINX, with E and N both on die 1, the V and X are on the same die--in this case die 2 or die 4. However, there is no way for GRAY to be made if V and X are on die 2. V and X are on die 4 and J on die 2. If the G in GRAY were the sixth letter on die 2 and the Y were on die 1, there would be no way for BURY to be constructed. G is on die 1 and Y on die 2. U (BURY) completes die 1 and the solution. In sum, the letters on the four dice of Letter Dice 13 (in order of recovery) are
