| From the introduction, the Venice Villa has two apartments on each of its
three floors, with those on the west side of the building numbered 1W, 2W,
and 3W from bottom-to-top and the apartments on the east side of the building
numbered 1E, 2E, and 3E from bottom-to-top. By clue 3, Alicia and Mr. Keller
share one floor of the building, while by clue 9, Erica and the pizza
lover who had a sausage pizza Friday night share a floor. These must be two
different floors of the building. By clue 7, Dave and the person who had
a hamburger pizza share a floor. Since Alicia didn't have a hamburger pizza
(8), the floors in clues 3 and 7 must be different. Since Dave didn't have
a sausage pizza (12), the floors in clues 7 and 9 cannot be the same. So,
in each of clues 3, 7, and 9, a different floor of Venice Villa is named.
By clue 4. Ms. Owens has the apartment directly above the person who had a
Hawaiian pizza delivered. Since Hawaiian pizza wasn't Erica's choice (11),
the floor to which the Hawaiian pizza was delivered isn't in clue 9. Since
neither Alicia (8) nor Mr. Keller (11) had a Hawaiian pizza, the floor to
which the Hawaiian pizza was delivered isn't in clue 3. By clue 7, Dave had
a Hawaiian pizza Friday night and lives on the same floor as the person who
had a hamburger pizza. Again, by clue 4, Ms. Owens lives directly above Dave.
Ms. Owens isn't Cynthia, who lives directly above Bill (10). If Ms. Owens were
Erica, the person who had a sausage pizza would live directly above the one who
had hamburger. Since Ms. Owens didn't order a cheese pizza (13), by clue 6,
the person who did have a cheese pizza would have to live above the one
who had a sausage pizza, who then would be Mr. Purvis. By clue 10, Mr. Purvis
would be Bill, and Cynthia would be the person who ordered a cheese pizza.
However, from earlier, Alicia and Mr. Keller share a floor
in the Venice Villa--impossible given this arrangement. So, Ms. Owens is Alicia,
and Mr. Keller lives above the person who had a hamburger pizza. By clue 6,
Mr. Keller ordered a cheese pizza, and Mr. Purvis had a hamburger pizza.
Bill is Mr. Keller, and Cynthia lives above him (10). Cynthia had a sausage pizza,
and Erica lives above Alicia. By elimination, Mr. Purvis is Fred. By clue 1,
Alicia had a mushroom pizza delivered, and Dave is Morton. Erica ordered a
pepperoni pizza. By clue 2, Erica is Langhorn and Cynthia Nichols. Erica
Langhorn lives in Apt. 3W (5). with Cynthia in 3E. Alicia lives in 2W, Bill
in 2E, Dave in 1W, and Fred in 1E. In sum, the pizza lovers live in Venice Villa
and had their favorites delivered as follows:
- 3W -- Erica Langhorn, pepperoni pizza
- 3E -- Cynthia Nichols, sausage pizza
- 2W -- Alicia Owens, mushroom pizza
- 2E -- Bill Keller, cheese pizza
- 1W -- Dave Morton, Hawaiian pizza
