| From the introduction, the five school board members were seated in chairs
#1-5 left-to-right from the citizens' viewpoint. By clue 6, Karen sat in
the chair between those of Nick and East. If Karen were seated in chair 3,
then Marie in clue 1 would have to be East--no (clue 5). Karen sat in one
of the inside seats but not the center seat. Then either Nick or East sat
in chair 3 (6). If Nick had been in chair 3, by clue 1, Marie would have
been in the other inside chair next to Nick. Since Nick isn't the member
from Glencoe (10), Nick would have proposed buying a new Driver's Ed car
(1), with the Glencoe member seated outside of Marie at the table. However,
there is no way for clue 7 to work given this arrangement. In clue 6, then,
East sat in chair 3, with Nick in the outside chair next to Karen. Since
Marie isn't East (5), by clue 1, Marie sat in the other inside chair next
to East, with East either the Glencoe member or the one who proposed buying
a new Driver's Ed car. If East were the member from Glencoe, the member
who proposed buying the new car would have sat outside Marie. By clues
8 and 5, East would have proposed sending the principal to the conference,
with Karen being Summerset's board member (5) and Marie Downey. However, there
is no way for clue 7 to work given this arrangement. So, by clue 1, East
proposed buying a new Driver's Ed car; and the member from Glencoe sat to
the outside of Marie. By clue 7, John is East; Lisa is Glencoe's board
representative. Since Lisa then isn't Downey (10), by clue 8, Karen proposed
sending the principal to the conference, Nick is Downey, and John is the
member from Summerset. Lisa proposed hiring a new baseball coach (3).
Then Marie represents Brothers Valley on the board (7). By clue 9, Karen
is Broome, while Nick is the member from Indian Lake. Karen represents
Jefferson Township on the board. Nick proposed buying new band uniforms
(9), with Marie proposing to repair the elementary school gymnasium.
Marie is Avila and Lisa Carson (2). By clue 4, Lisa sat in chair 1, with
Marie in 2, John in 3, Karen in 4, and Nick in 5. In sum, Sundown District
school board members sat as follows at their last meeting:
