Word Square 12
Show us the MONEY! and rebuild Word Square 12.
September 3, 2007
From the introduction, each row and each column of the 6x6 Word Square contains the characters MONEY and a blank cell in some order, so that no character or space can be repeated in a row or a column. By clue 5, E is the 2nd letter across row 4; while by clue 11, E is the 2nd letter across row 2. Therefore, the row 2 E is in column 2 and the row 4 E in column 3; or the row 2 E is in column 3 and the row 4 E in column 2. Testing the latter case, by clue 1, the M in column 2 would be in row 3. Then in clue 6, the space and M in row 2 would be to the right of the E--impossible, since the space must precede the E, which is the 2nd letter in row 2. So, in clues 5 and 11, the row 2 E is in column 2 and the row 4 E in column 3. By clue 1, the M in column 2 is in row 1. By clue 10, the M in row 5 cannot be in column 2 and must be in column 1. Then the column 1 E is in row 6 (clue 7). By clue 3, O is the 4th letter in row 1; while by clue 8, O is the 2nd letter down column 4. The O in row 1 must be in column 5. In clue 12, O and M are either in rows 2 and 3 of column 3 or in rows 5 and 6. Trying O and M in rows 2 and 3 of column 3, the column 4 O would be in row 3 (8). The row 2 space and M in clue 6 then could not be in columns 4 and 5 (2) and would be in columns 5 and 6. Y in column 5 would be in row 3 (2). Space in column 4 would be in row 1 (8). E in row 3 would be in column 6--but there would then be no way for an E to appear in row 1. Therefore, in clue 12, O and M are not in rows 2 and 3 of column 3 and must be in rows 5 and 6. By clue 8, the column 4 O is in either row 2 or row 3. If the column 4 O were in row 2, space and M in row 2 would be in columns 5 and 6 (6). Y in column 5 would be in row 3 (2). Since the row 1 E then couldn't be in column 4 (13), the row 1 E would be in column 6. The column 5 E would be in row 5, with the column 4 E then in row 3 below the O, followed by N in row 4 (13). However, there would then be no way for an M to appear in column 4. So, in clue 8, the column 4 O is in row 3. By clue 13, the E and N down column 4 are in rows 1 and 2 or in rows 5 and 6. If the column 4 E and N were in rows 1 and 2, the row 2 space and M would be in columns 5 and 6 (6). The column 4 M would be in row 4. The column 5 M would be in row 3 and would be the 2nd letter down column 5--no (2). Therefore, by clue 13, the E and N down column 4 are in rows 5 and 6. The row 5 Y isn't in column 5 (2) or column 6 (9) and is in column 2. If the column 6 E were in row 3, there would be no place for an E in column 5; the column 6 E is in row 1, with the column 5 E in row 3. Then by clue 2, Y in column 5 is in row 2. M in column 5 is in row 4, with N then in row 5 and space in row 6. Space in row 5 is in column 6. By clue 6, in row 2, space is in column 3 and M in column 4. M in column 6 is in row 3. By clue 8, space in column 4 is in row 1, with Y in row 4. N cannot go in row 3, column 3 (14) and is in row 1 with Y in row 3. Y in column 1 is in row 1. Y in column 6 is in row 6. Then O in row 6 is in column 2. The space in column 1 is in row 4, with the space in column 2 in row 3 (4). N in row 3 is in column 1, with O in row 2 completing column 1. Row 2 has N in column 6. Column 6 has O in row 4. The row 4 N is in column 2. In sum, Word Square 12 is filled as follows:

 123456
Y M N  O E
O E  M Y N
N  Y O E M
 N E Y M O
M Y O E N
E O M N  Y
