The Mapmakers
Mapmakers draw new maps of growing local communities.
July 2, 2007
From the introduction, no two of the veteran mapmakers have made the same number of maps for Map It! Inc. By clue 1, the five have made a total of 800 maps, with the fewest any mapmaker has done being 50. By clue 2, Jeff has made twice as many maps as Bridges, who has made 50 more maps than the man mapping Clear Falls; while by clue 4, McNally has made twice as many maps as Fred, who has made 50 more than the man mapping Three Rivers. Since three men are named in each clue, one or more must be common to both clues. Jeff can't be McNally and Fred can't be Bridges, or the men mapping Clear Falls and Three Rivers would have made the same number of maps during their careers. If McNally were making the map of Clear Falls, then combining the two clues would mean the man mapping Three Rivers had made 50 maps during his time with Map It! (1), Fred would have made 100, McNally 200, Bridges 250, and Jeff 500--a total of 1100, no (1). Similarly, if Jeff were making the map of Three Rivers, then combining clues 2 and 4 would mean the man mapping Clear Falls would have made 50 maps during his time with Map It! (1), Bridges would have made 100, Jeff 200, Fred 250, and McNally 500--again a total of 1100 and again no (1). If Bridges were making the map of Three Rivers, then combining clues 2 and 4 would mean the man mapping Clear Falls would have made 50 maps during his time with Map It! (1), Bridges would have made 100, Jeff 200, Fred 150, and McNally 300--a total of 800 and consistent with clue 1. Walt would be the one mapping Clear Falls (clue 7). By clue 6, Rick would be Bridges and Street Fred. Jeff would then be McNally with 300 maps to his credit--no (8). So, the only possible overlap between clues 2 and 4 is that Fred is mapping Clear Falls. Combining the two clues would mean the man mapping Three Rivers has made 50 maps during his time with Map It! (1), Fred has made 100, McNally 200, Bridges 150, and Jeff 300--a total of 800 and consistent with clue 1. Walt is Bridges (7). By clue 6, Street is Fred; and Rick is mapping Three Rivers. Eric is McNally. Walt is mapping Highpoint, and Rick is Ferry (5). Jeff is Atlas; he is mapping Great Harbor (3). Eric is making the map of Summerset. In sum, the five mapmakers are

  • Jeff Atlas, Great Harbor, 300
  • Eric McNally, Summerset, 200
  • Walt Bridges, Highpoint, 150
  • Fred Street, Clear Falls, 100
  • Rick Ferry, Three Rivers, 50
