New Sun
Settlers from Mother Earth mine the six planets orbiting New Sun.
July 24, 2006
By clue 1, these three planets are consecutive from closest to farthest from the New Sun: da Vinci, the planet settled by travelers brought on the Invincible, and the planet with vast uranium deposits; while by clue 6, these three planets are consecutive from closest to farthest from the New Sun: Prometheus, the planet with gold reserves, and the planet settled by passengers on the John Glenn. Since the uranium deposits aren't on Prometheus (clue 4) and the settlers of da Vinci didn't arrive on the John Glenn (8), there is no overlap between the two clues and all six planets in the New Sun system are named. Then either the planets in clue 1 are 1st-3rd closest and those in clue 6 are 4th-6th closest to the star or vice versa. Trying the latter case, Prometheus would be closest followed outward by the planet with gold mines, the planet settled by passengers on the John Glenn (6), da Vinci, the planet settled by travelers on the starship Invincible, and the planet with vast uranium deposits. By clue 9, the de Vinci settlers would have arrived on the Nina IV, the 5th planet out from New Sun would have vast silver ore on it, and Gagarin would have the uranium deposits. The settlers on Gagarin wouldn't have come aboard the Henry Hudson (3) or Emperor Ming (7) and would have come on the starship Admiral Picard. However, the settlers who came to the New Sun system on the Admiral Picard aren't uranium miners (4). So, the arrangement with the three planets in clue 6 closer to New Sun than the three in clue 1 can't work. Combining clues 1 and 6, then, the six planets orbiting New Sun from closest to farthest are da Vinci, the planet colonized by settlers brought on the Invincible, the planet with vast uranium deposits, Prometheus, the planet with vast gold reserves, and the planet settled by passengers on the John Glenn. Since the silver deposits aren't on the planet colonized by the Invincible (5), by clue 9, the Nina IV brought colonists to the planet where uranium is plentiful, silver is the prime asset on Prometheus, and Gagarin is the 5th planet outward from New Sun. Neither Terra Nova (2) nor Anthem (7) is the 6th planet out, so Dawn is. By clue 7, the Emperor Ming brought settlers to da Vinci, while the element mined on Dawn is chromium. The Henry Hudson landed colonists on Prometheus, and the Admiral Picard landed settlers on Gagarin (3). By clue 5, Terra Nova's settlers came aboard Invincible and Anthem's aboard Nina IV. Finally, Terra Nova's main export is rhodium and da Vinci's is platinum (2). In sum, the six planets orbiting New Sun, in order from closest to farthest, are

  • da Vinci, Emperor Ming, platinum
  • Terra Nova, Invincible, rhodium
  • Anthem, Nina IV, uranium
  • Prometheus, Henry Hudson, silver
  • Gagarin, Admiral Picard, gold
  • Dawn, John Glenn, chromium
