The Breakneck Stakes
Eight thoroughbreds run for the tulips in the second leg of horse racing's Triple Tiara.
May 29, 2006
By clue 1, Easy Ed finished one place ahead of the thoroughbred from One Oak Stable, which finished one place ahead of Geraldo Riviera's mount. By clue 5, Sloefoot Sid finished one place ahead of the horse ridden by Edgar Louvre, which finished one place ahead of the Rolling Hills Stable entry. If there were overlap between the clues, either Geraldo Riviera would have ridden Sloefoot Sid--which he did not (clue 8)--or Easy Ed would be the Rolling Hills entry--by clues 2 and 9, no. Therefore, six of the eight horses in the Breakneck Stakes are mentioned between clues 1 and 5. By clue 11, Fleet Festus finished one place ahead of Pat Knight's ride, which finished one place ahead of the Newmown Field Stable's thoroughbred. So, there must be overlap between clue 11 and either clue 1 or clue 5. If there were overlap between clues 1 and 11, either Geraldo Riviera would have ridden Fleet Festus--no (8)--or Easy Ed would belong to Newmown Field Stable--no (2, 9). Trying overlap between clues 5 and 11, by clue 15, the Rolling Hills horse isn't Fleet Festus and wasn't ridden by Pat Knight; while by clue 14, Edgar Louvre didn't ride the Newmown Field entry. The only possible overlap is that Sloefoot Sid is the Newmown Field thoroughbred. So, between clues 5 and 11 we have five horses who placed consecutively, with the other three entries listed in order of finish in clue 1. Then either Easy Ed in clue 1 or Fleet Festus in clue 11 won the Breakneck Stakes. If Easy Ed had won, the order of finish in the race would have been Easy Ed, the One Oak Stable entry, the horse ridden by Geraldo Riviera, Fleet Festus, Pat Knight's ride, Sloefoot Sid from Newmown Field Stable, Edgar Louvre's mount, and the Rolling Hills Stable entry. By clue 3, the three horses that finished win-place-show (1st-2nd-3rd) in some order are Willing Willie. Steven Gary's mount, and the Still Water Stable entry. Since the Still Water Stable silks are orange and black (2), by clue 9, Easy Ed would have been ridden by Steven Gary, Geraldo Riviera would have ridden the Still Water thoroughbred, and Willing Willie would be One Oak's prize horse. By clue 7, then, Geraldo Riviera would have ridden Blazing Bob and the Deep Grass Stable entry would have been Fleet Festus--no (13). Therefore, Easy Ed in clue 1 did not win the Breakneck Stakes; Fleet Festus in clue 11 did. The order of finish in the race from clues 11, 5, and 1 then was Fleet Festus, Pat Knight's mount, Newmown Field Stable's Sloefoot Sid, the horse ridden by Edgar Louvre, the Rolling Hills Stable entry, Easy Ed, the One Oak Stable horse, and Geraldo Riviera's ride. By clue 3, the three horses that finished win-place-show (1st-2nd-3rd) in some order are Willing Willie. Steven Gary's mount, and the Still Water Stable entry; so Willing Willie was ridden by Pat Knight, the Still Water Stable entry was Fleet Festus, and Steven Gary rode Sloefoot Sid. By clue 7, Blazing Bob finished one place ahead of the Deep Grass Stable entry, so Blazing Bob is either the One Oak Stable or Rolling Hills Stable thoroughbred. If Blazing Bob were the One Oak entry, Deep Grass Stable's horse would have been ridden by Geraldo Riviera (7). By clue 6, the Tall Cedars Stable entry would have been Easy Ed. Then Long Reach Stable's jockey would have been Edgar Louvre, with Raoul Julio riding for Rolling Hills Stable (10). However, there is no way for clue 12 to now work. In clue 7, then, Blazing Bob is the Rolling Hills Stable horse, with Easy Ed the Deep Grass entry. By clue 10, the Long Reach Stable entry was ridden by Edgar Louvre and Blazing Bob by Raoul Julio. Kent Saddler rode Xciting Xavier for One Oak Stable (12). By clue 6, Rambling Ray was entered in the Breakneck by Long Reach Stable, while the Tall Cedars entry finished last. Bill Bootmaker rode Easy Ed and Juan Valdez won the race aboard Fleet Festus (4). By elimination, Willing Willie was entered by Green Acres Stable and Zephyr Zeke by Tall Cedars. In sum, the order of finish in the 2006 Breakneck Stakes is

  • Fleet Festus, Still Water Stable, Juan Valdez
  • Willing Willie, Green Acres Stable, Pat Knight
  • Sloefoot Sid, Newmown Field Stable, Steven Gary
  • Rambling Ray, Long Reach Stable, Edgar Louvre
  • Blazing Bob, Rolling Hills Stable, Raoul Julio
  • Easy Ed, Deep Grass Stable, Bill Bootmaker
  • Xciting Xavier, One Oak Stable, Kent Saddler
  • Zephyr Zeke, Tall Cedars Stable, Geraldo Riviera
