3) fails. Trying 4), that the player whose character is a centaur is Ortiz,
combining clues 5 and 8 would have the player from San Diego with the
lowest-rated character; he would be Chad and the rating would be 400 (1).
Ortiz's centaur would have a rating of 500, Dave's character a mark of 700
(8), the player from Los Angeles' character a rating of 600, and Ed's a
score of 800 (5). Alex would be Ortiz and Ben from Los Angeles (7). Dave
would be from Phoenix (3). Ed would be from St. Louis (2) and Alex from
Detroit--no (7). So, 4) fails and 5) remains; Dave is from Los Angeles.
Combining clues 5 and 8, then, the player with the lowest-rated character
would be the one from San Diego--by clue 1, Chad with a rating of 400;
Ortiz's character would have a mark of 500, Dave's 700 (8), the centaur
600, and Ed's character 900 (5). By clue 3, the centaur is the man from
Phoenix's character; and Ben is Ortiz. By elimination, Alex is from Phoenix.
By clue 2, Ed is from St. Louis, and Dave's character is a goblin.
Ben is from Detroit. By clue 6, Ben's character is a druid, and Chad is
Miller. By clue 5, Ed's character is a troll, with Chad's an elf. Ed's
last name is Lucas (4). By clue 9, Alex is Norton and Dave Platt. In
