The Wodgeweed Thimbles
Noted English characters decorate thimbles in a 3x3 curio box.
January 3, 2005
The Wodgeweed thimbles are in a 3x3 curio box; we will label the top row of the box left-to-right as 1-1, 1-2, and 1-3; the middle row left-to-right as 2-1, 2-2, and 2-3; and the bottom row left-to-right as 3-1, 3-2, and 3-3. By clue 1, the Henry the VIII thimble is in one of the four corner boxes and isn't in the top row; it must be in 3-1 or 3-3. Trying 3-3, the yellow thimble would be in 2-3 (clue 1). By clue 5, the Diana, Princess of Wales thimble would be in the center position, 2-2, with the green thimble in 1-1. Then by clue 8, the Charles Dickens thimble would be in 1-3, with the Diana, Princess of Wales thimble the purple one. By clue 3, the Winston Churchill thimble would be in 3-2 and the blue thimble in 3-1, in the same column as the green thimble--no (9). So, the Henry the VIII thimble isn't in 3-3 and is in 3-1, with the yellow thimble in 2-1 (1). By clue 8, the purple thimble is either the Henry VIII or is in 2-2. Trying the purple thimble in 2-2, the Charles Dickens thimble would be in 1-3 (8). By clue 5, the green thimble would be in 1-1, with the purple thimble the one of Diana, Princess of Wales. Since the blue and green thimbles are in different columns of the curio box (9), by clue 3, the blue thimble would be in 3-2 and the Winston Churchill in 3-3. By clue 7, the Charles Dickens thimble would be pink, with the King Arthur one in 2-3. By clue 4, the Sherlock Holmes thimble must be in 3-2, with the black and orange thimbles in the two remaining holes in the rightmost column of the box. Then by clue 6, the brown thimble would be in 1-2. By elimination, the red thimble would be the Henry VIII--no (10). So, the purple thimble in clue 8 isn't in 2-2 and is the Henry VIII, with the Charles Dickens thimble in 2-2. By clue 5, the Charles Dickens thimble is green, and the Diana, Princess of Wales one is in cell 3-3. Since the blue and green thimbles are in different columns of the curio box (9), by clue 3, the blue thimble must be in 1-1 and the Winston Churchill in 1-2. By clue 7, the pink thimble is in 1-3 and the King Arthur one in 2-3. By clue 4, the Sherlock Holmes thimble is in 2-1 or 3-2. If it were in 2-1, the black and orange thimbles would be in 1-2 and 3-2 or vice versa (4)--by clue 2, black would be in 1-2 and orange in 3-2. By clue 6, however, the Beatles thimble would be in 2-1, where the Sherlock Holmes thimble already would be. So, by clue 4, the Sherlock Holmes thimble is in 3-2. By clues 2 and 4, the black thimble is in 2-3 and the orange in 3-3, with cell 2-1 holding the William Shakespeare thimble. By clue 6, the Beatles thimble is in 1-1 and the brown thimble in 1-2. By elimination, the Robin Hood thimble is in 1-3 and the Sherlock Holmes thimble is red. In sum, the Wodgeweed thimbles are in the curio box top-to-bottom and left-to-right as follows:

  • blue Beatles, brown Winston Churchill, pink Robin Hood
  • yellow William Shakespeare, green Charles Dickens, black King Arthur
  • purple Henry VIII, red Sherlock Holmes, orange Diana, Princess of Wales
