Carolers
"God rest ye merry gentlemen, let nothing you dismay ..."
December 20, 2004
From the introduction, the carolers sang at the five houses on Holly Lane in order 101 through 109. By clues 2, 4, and 6, the carolers sang "The First Noel", "Joy to the World", and "We Three Kings" at the three middle houses in some order; so at 105 Holly Lane they sang one of those three carols. If they had sung "The First Noel" at 105 Holly Lane, then the Wanamakers and the family who fed the carolers shortbread cookies would live on either side of 105 (2). Since the house where the carolers sang "Joy to the World" didn't serve shortbread cookies (clue 7), it would be the Wanamakers who did; the carolers then would have sung "We Three Kings" and had shortbread in the third middle house. If the people in 105 were the Nordstroms (4), they would have served hot chocolate to the singers (6), which they didn't (8). So, the family in 105 would have served mulled cider (4), with the Nordstroms then living in the house outside of where "Joy to the World" was sung (4). By clue 6, the Fields family would live at 105 Holly Lane, and hot chocolate would have been served at the end house beside the one where "We Three Kings" would have been performed. However, whether the Nordstroms were in 101 or the family serving hot chocolate lived in 101 Holly Lane, there is no way for clue 5 to work. Therefore, the carolers did not sing "The First Noel" at 105 Holly Lane. If the carolers had sung "Joy to the World" at 105 Holly Lane, by clue 4, the Nordstroms and the family who served mulled cider would live in the interior houses on either side of where "Joy to the World" was sung. Since the family at whose house the carolers sang "Joy to the World" didn't serve the singers shortbread cookies (7), by clue 2, they would be the Wanamakers. By clue 6, the Wanamakers would have served the chorale hot chocolate. By clue 5, the family who served the group truffles would have to live at 101 or 107 Holly Lane with the Hechts then at 103 or 109 respectively. If the Nordstroms had served truffles at 107 Holly Lane and the Hechts lived at 109, the Fields family would reside at 101 and the Macys at 103 (3). "We Three Kings" would have been sung at 103 (6) and "The First Noel" at 107, with the Hechts serving the group shortbread cookies (2). By elimination, the Fieldses would have treated the singers to roasted chestnuts, which they did not (9). If the family serving truffles were at 101 Holly Lane and the Hechts served the cider at 103 Holly Lane, the Macys would live at 109 and the Fields at 101 (3). By clue 6, the carolers would have sung "We Three Kings" at 103. Then "The First Noel" would have been sung at 107, with shortbread cookies the treat at 109 Holly Lane (2). By elimination, the Nordstroms who would have heard "The First Noel" at 107 Holly Lane would have served roasted chestnuts--no (9). So, the carolers also didn't sing "Joy to the World" at 105 Holly Lane and sang "We Three Kings". Then on one side of 105 would be the Fields' home and on the other the home of the family who served hot chocolate (6). By clues 2 and 4, either the Wanamakers or the Nordstroms lives in 105 Holly Lane; by the same two clues, the family who lives in 105 served either shortbread cookies or mulled cider. If the Fields were in 103 Holly Lane and the family who served hot chocolate in 107. there is no way for clue 5 to work. So, the family who served the carolers hot chocolate live at 103 and the Fields family at 107 Holly Lane. By clue 5, the family who served the truffles live at either 101 or 107 Holly Lane. If they lived at 101, with the Hechts at 103, by clue 1 the carolers would have sung "O Holy Night" at 109 Holly Lane. Then the Macys would live at 105 (3). However, by clues 4 and 6, either the Wanamakers or Nordstroms must live at 105 Holly Lane. So, the house where the carolers enjoyed truffles is at 107, and the Hecht family lives at 109 Holly Lane. Since by clues 4 and 6 either the Wanamakers or Nordstroms must live at 105 Holly Lane, the Macys live at 103 (3). By clue 7, then, the carolers sang "Joy to the World" at the Fields' at 107, and thus "The First Noel" at 103 Holly Lane. By clue 4, the Nordstroms live at 105 Holly Lane, and the Hechts thanked the singers with mulled cider. By clue 2, the Wanamakers live at 101 Holly lane, and the Nordstroms treated the carolers with shortbread cookies. By elimination, the Wanamakers started the carolers off with roasted chestnuts--for "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" (10). The Summerset Singers performed "O Holy Night" at the Hechts. The carolers sang on Holly Lane as follows:

  • 101 - "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" at the Wanamakers, roasted chestnuts
  • 103 - "The First Noel" at the Macys, hot chocolate
  • 105 - "We Three Kings" at the Nordstroms, shortbread cookies
  • 107 - "Joy to the World" at the Fields, truffles
  • 109 - "O Holy Night" at the Hechts, mulled cider
