Calling ZZZ Road Service
Car problems keep Zeke and his truck busy.
June 16, 2003
In both clues 4 and 6, three different consecutive road service jobs for Zeke and ZZZ Road Service are given, so that there must be some overlap between the two clues: either the car on Technical Drive was out of gas, or the job on Randall Road was for Mr. Kelly. Testing the latter case, then in consecutive order ZZZ aided the car out of gas, Mr. Kelly on Randall Road, Mrs. Johnson on Technical Drive, and the car that needed towed for repair. If these four problems had been the 2nd through 5th ones, there is no way for clue 7 to work. If the four had been 1st through 4th, then by clue 7, the towing job would have been on Hornbeam Court and the 5th service call would have been to change a flat tire. The 3rd call to help Mrs. Johnson would be to jumpstart a battery (clue 1)--no (2). So, the second combination of clues 4 and 6 fails and the first remains: in consecutive order these four service calls were made by ZZZ: to aid Mr. Kelly, to a car out of gas on Technical Drive, to tow a car from Randall Road, and to assist Mrs. Johnson. The calls couldn't have been answered 1st-4th, since by clue 7, the call on Hornbeam Court would have come from Mrs. Johnson and didn't (2); they were the 2nd-5th trips Zeke and the ZZZ truck made Friday. By clue 7, the 1st call was to a car was stranded on Hornbeam Court, and the tire change was for Mr. Kelly. By clue 3, the Toyota and Honda calls were back-to-back. They weren't 1st-2nd (7), 3rd-4th (8), or 4th-5th (3) and were 2nd and 3rd in order. In clue 1, then, where all five calls are listed, Mr. Kelly's Toyota needed a flat changed on Shadow Way. By elimination, the 5th trip was to Old Mill Pike. By clue 5, the aid to Mrs. Nixon was the 3rd or 4th service call of the day. If it had been 3rd with the one to the Buick then 4th (5), in clue 1, the Buick would belong to Miss Martin--no (9). So, Zeke helped Mrs. Nixon 4th and the Buick owner 5th. By clue 1, then, Miss Martin's aid was 1st, and Mrs Nixon owns the Dodge. By elimination, Mr. Leonard got service 3rd, and Miss Martin has a Ford. By clue 1, Miss Martin had the dead battery, and Mrs. Johnson locked herself out of their car. Friday morning's service calls for Zeke and ZZZ Road Service were

  • 1st - Miss Martin, Hornbeam Court, Ford, dead battery
  • 2nd - Mr. Kelly, Shadow Way, Toyota, flat tire
  • 3rd - Mr. Leonard, Technical Drive, Honda, out of gas
  • 4th - Mrs. Nixon, Randall Road, Dodge, tow to repair shop
  • 5th - Mrs. Johnson, Old Mill Pike, Buick, lock keys in car
