Main St.--Then and Now
The stores on Main St. in 1952 and today.
June 3, 2002
By clue 1, the building occupied by the Hunan Manor Chinese Restaurant is between those occupied in 1952 by Hershey's Soda Fountain and Parr's TV Sales & Service. By clue 2, the building housing Grey's Bus Depot 50 years ago is between the buildings now leased by Second Time Around consignment shop and Starbucks coffee. The Hunan Manor and Grey's Bus occupie(d) different Main St. Buildings (6). Therefore, combining clues 1 and 2, the buildings occupied now by Hunan Manor Chinese Restaurant and then by Grey's Bus Depot must be either two or three doors apart. If they were two doors apart, by clue 8, the Starbucks coffee house isn't in the same building as Hershey's Soda Fountain or Parr's TV was in 1952; so in clue 2, the building now occupied by Second Time Around would be the one between the Hunan Manor and Grey's Bus structures, and Starbucks would be in the building on the other side of the one housing Grey's Bus in 1952. By clue 1, either Hershey's or Parr's would have been in the Second Time Around store 50 years earlier, with the other of the two then in the building flanking the Hunan Manor's on the other side. Since Starbucks isn't in one of the end buildings of the Main St. row (8), there would be another business to the outside of Starbucks locale. By clue 7, then, Dell Computers would have to be situated between Second Time Around and Starbucks--but Dell is flanked by the buildings that formerly housed Mayer's Butcher Shop and Robinson's Sports Shop, conflicting with clue 1. Therefore, the buildings occupied by the Hunan Manor Chinese Restaurant now and Grey's Bus Depot then must be three doors apart, i. e., the buildings one in from each end of the block. By clue 8, Starbucks must be in the building to the inside of the block next to where Grey's was, with Second Time Around consignment store in the outside building next to Grey's (2). Both 24-Hour Fitness (3) and Dell Computers (7) must occupy inside buildings on the block, so Blockbuster video is in the end unit next to the Hunan Manor. Then Truman's Men's Store had the building in 1952 now occupied by the Chinese restaurant (4). By clue 7, then, Dell can't be in the storefront between Starbucks and Hunan Manor and must be between Starbucks and Second Time Around. By elimination, 24-Hour Fitness is between Hunan Manor and Starbucks. Truman's Men's Store wasn't in 109 Main St. (9) and was thus in 103. Blockbuster is in 101, 24-Hour Fitness in 105, Starbucks in 107, Dell Computers in 109, and Second Time Around in 111. By clue 5, Mayer's Butcher Shop wasn't in the Second Time Around structure; so by clue 7, Robinson's Sports Shop was in 111 and Mayer's in 107 Main St. Since 24-Hour Fitness isn't in the old Parr's TV storefront (3), Parr's was at 101 Main St. Hershey's Soda Fountain was at 105 Main. In sum, the businesses on the north side of Main St. then and now are

  • 101 - Parr's TV Sales & Service, Blockbuster video
  • 103 - Truman's Men's Store, Hunan Manor Chinese Restaurant
  • 105 - Hershey's Soda Fountain, 24-Hour Fitness
  • 107 - Mayer's Butcher Shop, Starbucks coffee
  • 109 - Grey's Bus Depot, Dell Computers
  • 111 - Robinson's Sports Shop, Second Time Around consignment store
